Shokugeki no Soma tells the story of a boy named Sōma Yukihira, whose dream is to become a full-time chef in his father’s neighborhood restaurant and surpass his father’s culinary skills. But just as Sōma graduates from middle school, his father, Jōichirō Yukihira, gets a new job that requires him to travel around the world and closes his shop. However, Sōma’s fighting spirit is rekindled by a challenge from Jōichirō which is to survive in an elite culinary school where only 1% of the students manage to graduate, where he meets many amazing students and experiences new events that allow him to grow further towards his goal
It’s not exactly the best thing to read on a hungry stomach, but considering I live away from home…I often end up doing that. The updates on this manga are interesting enough and new enough to keep you on your toes.
The art is beautiful, even if there are too many sexualised scenes. And I wish I could say that it’s because Yukihira is as oblivious as Luffy (which he is) but that’s not the reason. Each time the characters eat good food, their clothing either constricts or rips off..so prepare yourself! (I mean it guys…seriously…sometimes it’s just disturbing, despite the lack of you know…the things)
Other than that, the story direction for this manga is always taking turns that are unexpected, even if slightly expected. Following Prince of Tennis style, So far, Soma is yet to lose a battle…but he has lost all his battles with his father. That said, he has tied before or come practically close to failing before so hey- thumbs up for that bit.
It’s always interesting to read the plot twists that occur because there really isn’t much that can be done in a school dedicated to cooking…except show them cooking and oh boy- does this manga do that!
It’s even popular enough to have an anime for itself (latest English episode is 24… I would know, I watch it!) So yeah, definately loved by the population and by me! I mean come one! how does one not like it?
It’s like, you know that Juuichiro has a good place in the school, and the latest battle has shown that Yukihira has the skill…but I really wish they would show a little bit of the Aldini brothers…they’ve been missing quite a bit since the entire internship thing happened.
Also, what is up with Erina’s dad? I get that he has a thing for the “Divine Tongue” and flavour and what not, but isn’t the most important part of cooking the distinction between flavours, and the fact that each person cooks the same dish slightly differntly? Think noodles/ramen/Maggie…everybody has their own style and he irritates me ><
On the bright side, did you see the last page of the latest chapter? the look on their faces at the realization that he’s the (prodigal son’s) son.
Side thought, anyone else get irritated with Erina in the first couple…volumes? I mean until maybe the latest chapter, her rejection’s of most food and just the snooty way in which she looks down on someone’s hard work was…downright pissing off. At least withe the realisation why, the whole thing makes a little sense…a little but not much.
Also, has anyone tried out any recipes?
Anyone really….Just not those hungry souls who are on an empty stomach. Adventure, a little bit of angst, slice of life…and meant for those above the age of 15.
This is somthing to read when you have the time to spare, a good manga to pick up for those who don’t mind waiting for a good 2 weeks for a new chapter….and over all just those who love mangas that have cooking or competition in general.
~As always, comment below if you want to read/are reading/or have read this manga. But remember; keep it clean ~
